Say Yes More Often: The Gateway to Spontaneity

There’s a moment before every great adventure when you have a choice.

Say yes. Or play it safe.

Years ago, I was running a real estate office, deep in the grind of day-to-day leadership. One evening, an agent walked into my office and said something that would end up changing my life:

“Chris, I’m taking a stand for you. I want you to come with me to a personal development event tonight.”

It would’ve been easy to say no. I had work to do, emails to catch up on, and a million reasons to stick to the script.

But something in me—call it curiosity, intuition, or maybe just a flicker of rebellion—said:

“Sure. Why not.”

That spontaneous yes became the first step in a journey that would completely change how I live, lead, and love.

Spontaneity Isn’t Reckless—It’s Brave

People often confuse spontaneity with impulsiveness. But there’s a difference.

Spontaneity is about trusting your gut. Following your curiosity. Letting yourself explore without overthinking everything to death.

It’s the opposite of living on autopilot. It’s engagement. Presence. Courage.

And it doesn’t have to be big or dramatic.

  • Saying yes to a last-minute dinner with friends
  • Taking a different route home just to see what’s there
  • Sending the message you’ve been thinking about for weeks

The Science Says It Works

Psychologists call this psychological flexibility—the ability to pivot and respond to life as it unfolds. Studies show it leads to higher resilience, more creativity, and even better mental health.

Saying yes more often stimulates the release of dopamine in the brain—your body’s natural “feel-good” chemical. That’s why unplanned moments often feel so meaningful: your brain remembers them.

Your Challenge This Week

Say yes to something you’d usually overthink or skip.

It doesn’t have to be huge. Just new. Just honest. Just a little bit outside your usual comfort zone.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s one small invitation or opportunity I could say yes to this week?
  • What might be waiting for me on the other side of that yes?

You never know where it could lead—but you’ll definitely miss it if you say no.

SpontaneousAF Credo:

“Opportunities don’t wait for perfect timing. Say yes. Figure it out later.”
